Binary Drift – The Guilded Age
Featured as a thread of singles from Mauricio Yrivarren A.K.A. Binary Drift’s debut album entitled ‘Pocket Tunes’, ‘The Guilded Age’ describes how we should encourage ourselves to move forward for the better, despite feeling overwhelmed. Describing the inspiration behind the track, Binary Drift explains;
“I sourced the title after the late 19th century era 'the Gilded Age' in the US where there was great economic growth and at the same time abject poverty and inequality. I had added the U in 'gilded' as a joke mirroring Nirvana's spelling of 'Nevermind', only to find out that 'guilded' is the old spelling.”.
A softly picked acoustic guitar opens ‘The Guilded Age’ with the lyrics, “Time won’t wait until we work to try and get it right, I wonder where I’ve been, I wonder who I really was”. The verse of only delicate vocals and acoustic guitar gently progresses to a chorus where we see a subtle increase of instrumentation featuring synth pads and a rhythm section, defining the change in structure.
The music returns to the acoustic guitar and vocal duo throughout the second verse and again gradually builds with the addition of music box synth melodies and a more robust rhythm section, transforming the soft-folk track into more of a pop-ballad style.
The track as a whole flows nicely but lacks drastic variation within the chordal structures used, staying tucked within the safe boundaries of the track’s genre. Because the track’s main focal point is the lyrics, there isn’t a huge need for a drastic variation in sound, just an addition here or there to boost the intricacy of the track.
All in all, the track works well as a calm, reflective piece of music, helping us question our inner motives and ultimate end goals. Listen to ‘The Guilded Age’ below!
