The ambient folk artist’s upcoming single (released 25th November) sees the signature comforting air of Joseph Donnelley’s vocals exhibit a unique take on one of his favourite childhood stories, The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader. “It’s about an island they discover on their travels but as they sail towards it they’re met with a darkness where all their dreams come true, but it’s not what everyone thinks.” (Joseph Donnelley).

As the track proceeds we see Elkyn’s sound develop and explore slightly more assertive textures. Still channelling delicate and heartfelt tones, stylistically the music strays from the padded synthesised ambience of ‘Beech’ and delves a little further into the world of guitar music.

With more commanding bass tones, a full drum kit and guitar band-instrumentation, the development in Elkyn’s artistic evolution shines through with a progressive yet, true growth. The fuller aspects of the track still flow amongst palliative female harmonies and music-box synth melodies, but separates itself from ‘Beech’ with an individual maturity needed for a stand-alone single proceeding the success of a strong EP.

Advancing on to explore new avenues, Elkyn’s debut releases have already provided us with versatility, sincerity and illuminated levels of insight and emotion. The pure nature of Joseph Donnelly’s music is yet to disappoint, and with a safe, balanced level of growth, ‘If Only it Was Alright Now’ proves to be the only suitable direction in which to travel when following ‘Beech’.
