Way Up – Soran

By Libby Driscoll

Canada’s freshest up-and-coming alt-pop artist Soran returns with his first single of 2022, Way Up.

Way Up – Soran

Throughout Soran’s 2021 discography, his approach to vulnerability and honesty has seeped into each release more and more. Way Up is no exception to this as the young Canadian artist lays his emotions on the line and faces the devastating loss of his mother.

“‘Way Up’ is written by a future me talking to a present me about how I got over the pain of losing a loved one… It’s ironic, because I’m doing all of the things that she wanted me to do now, but she’s gone. It sounds like me, yet so much of it is my mom. I find a way to celebrate her in every song.”

Though minimal in its musical components, the track is purely one with itself; it doesn’t try to push compositional boundaries for the sake of it but instead allows the virtue of Soran’s honesty to lead the song with grace. Still encompassed in his cool signature take on lo-fi, Way Up meets his sound with softer acoustic sections to make way for the lyrics to shine through as the song’s main focus, “I’m missing you every day, I’ll still cry and everything. I’ll fucking celebrate, ‘cause you deserve the tears”.

The development in Soran’s song writing is continuously highlighted with each release, from compositional and arrangement techniques to opening up and bearing brutal truths to his fanbase. It’s apparent that Soran is effortlessly growing into both himself and his sound, unlocking new levels of himself and his art with each new track.
