The Horn - Passion
By Thomas Bridger
With Nick True at its helm, indie-rock project The Horn release their new single Passion, re-igniting years of creativity and songwriting from the former bassist, whose accolades include touring the UK alongside REM with his previous band, Friends of Gavin.
Passion is about as indie as it gets; from the underlying retro synth tones to the crunchy guitar riffs chugging away through the chorus alongside the understatement of the lyrics throughout the section, harmonically staying put against the moving chords and melody from the rest of the band.
Mixed by Rich Turvey, whose CV includes working on the albums of Stockport’s finest, Blossoms, there is a clear level of professionalism and a high standard which not only serves as an arresting debut for The Horn, but a triumphant return for Nick True.
I think that this comeback story is told in this song alone; the central lyric, “there’s a burning passion in me”, mirrors True’s passion to tell his own story through his decades-old unreleased music. The verse and chorus dictate the style in which this story will be told, and the abrupt ending tells us that these guys are only just getting started, and we can’t wait to see what they have in store.
