Hey Camilla - Rague

By Libby Driscoll

Based in Yorkshire, experimental/alt artist Rague releases Camilla as the third instalment of his upcoming EP, My Superstition.

Hey Camilla - Rague

Straying from banality, My Superstition is a concept album focused on the terror of the unknown;

“’My Superstition’ is a collection of four songs that tell four stories of lives that have been moulded by superstition and a fear of the unknown - of people who are at the mercy of their desires and would love other people to be at the mercy of theirs. In ‘Hey Camilla’, a man talks with his therapist. He assures her, things aren’t as bad as they seem.”

- Rague on Hey Camilla

The composition of the track is certainly resonant of Radiohead and Muse, displaying a creative and experimental methodology in his writing style. Uniting industrial percussion sections with electronic feedback, the contrasting smoothness of the guitar’s groovy adlibs prove that a chalk-and-cheese approach can work wonders if done right.

Rague’s vocals throughout the track show an intensely capable range. From a full, potent low-end to an intricate falsetto performance and controlled cracks, the artist’s vocals truly act as an extension of his musical ability, stretching to more than just a tool to host the lyrics of the track.

Although Hey Camilla belongs to a string of concept tracks, the song’s unique, fresh nature adds a level of versatility allowing you to get lost in its groovy flow or actively listen to analyse and question its compositional boundaries. It truly is a model example of progressive song writing, proving itself fit to effectively adapt and reside within the walls of numerous genres.
