Typically releasing synthwave tracks, Walter Hansen has stepped of their comfort zone and delved into the world of country rock with their upcoming single ‘Good Lookin’’ (to be released on January 1st, 2021).

Opening with a fired-up in-your-face guitar riff, the track already radiates a typical American country-rock feel. The depredatory lyrics open up with the artist ogling someone’s appearance, making their ‘heart begin to pound in their chest’. Fierce country-strummed driven riffs are played beneath the vocals and hard-hitting standard rock beats keep the energy of the rhythm section heated.

The lyrics in the chorus, “Hey good looking, stay with me, close to you. Hey, good looking, make me part of your dreams, I wanna dream with you. Hey good looking, stay with me, close to you. Hey, good looking, make me part of your dreams, I wanna dream with you”, feel slightly unimaginative, especially with the lines being repeated. Compared to the rest of the music, the chorus feels dry in its composition and feels that it’s lacking something that the verses don’t. Perhaps the addition of backing harmonies would have helped boost the vocal presence, as they feel as if their outweighed by the rest of the instrumentation.  

The production of the track, however, has been polished very well. Though it has an obvious country-rock stamp plastered all over it, Nashville Producer Jason Garner has evidently worked carefully with the music to give it its drive.  

The stamina of the track is certainly up-beat, but the lyrics feel like they need a little more creativity next time. The instrumentation in ‘Good Lookin’’ is without a doubt neat but doesn’t stray too far from the predictable nature of country rock- it fits well within the genre, but doesn’t stick itself out with its own uniquely defining factors.
