Soran – Space Boy
By Libby Driscoll
Drawing influence from sounds of the future, Montreal-based alt-pop artist Soran releases his experimental new track, Space Boy.
Written and recorded in a friend’s apartment, Space Boy marks the beginning of a new artistic direction for Soran. Being the first song where he has had full control over the production process, the opportunity has allowed him to travel along alternative paths and take experimental risks within his work. Reworked alongside producer Connor Seidel, Space Boy plucks the baseline elements of lo-fi and heightens them to new and refined levels.
The track skins an assortment of consistency, running highly produced vocals beside jolty, bumping beats. The stop/start atmosphere at the beginning of the track already adds an enthralling element, making you question what direction the track is ultimately travelling towards. Joined by Soran’s vocals, “tell me that you’re coming to stay, ‘cause I can feel you slipping away”, repeated through electronic chic, the vocal texture flips to a cleaner, richer stance to command the verse.
The chorus sees a return of the staggered intro to the track, but this time is joined by a deeper arrangement, nodding its head to the unusual introduction whilst tailoring itself in a smoother direction. Repeating the same lyrics from the intro, the uneasy theme of knowing you’re about the lose someone is cemented in the bones of the song, through the whirlwind of texture and obscure rhythms, showing that Soran knows exactly how to embody his emotional stance through his work.
Space Boy feels like a pinnacle moment in Soran’s career. Through having a higher level of involvement in the production process as well as the compositional aspects, Space Boy feels like an undoubtedly, true-to-the-core piece of work from the Canadian artist’s discography.
