PJ Harding & Noah Cyrus - You belong to somebody else

Spending much of last year working remotely, the duo has overcome many of the obstacles that so many artists have had to face over the past 12 months. With Cyrus in LA and Harding in Australia, it’s impressive that People Don’t Change retains so much chemistry and authenticity, despite being written and recorded on opposite sides of the world.

Although Harding’s vocals open the song, it is Cyrus’ entry into the chorus that really makes the track; the harmonies are soothing in an almost lullaby-like fashion, and really demonstrate their raw musical chemistry. The harmonies are not only sung well, but both voices blend perfectly together, and they texture the melody line in a calming, angelic manner. Mainly consisting of guitar and vocals, the entry of tambourine and banjo in the second verse gives this acoustic folk song much more of a polished, collaborative feel, especially with the entry of bass and bass drum for the second chorus. The melody line is catchy, and reflected in the whistle solo towards the end, which upon my fourth or fifth listen, found myself whistling along to.

The music video, a graphic visualization of the lyrics, is directed by Matt Earl and is a not-so-subtle nod to The Notebook in its style and visual content. It perfectly captures the serene nature of the song while remaining interesting and entertaining to watch.

With the full EP set to release April 23rd, it’s sure to contain more displays of Cyrus and Harding’s musical concord and undeniable talent, and hopefully lives up to the two songs we have seen of it so far.
