Edwin Rosen – mitleerenhänden
By Libby Driscoll
Facing acceptance, hopefulness and defeat, German synth-pop artist Edwin Rosen announces the release of his debut EP, mitleerenhänden.
Mitleerenhänden, which translates to ‘empty-handed’ in English, is the name of Rosen’s forthcoming EP and title track of the album. The 20-year-old musician gains his artistic inspiration through the likes of Joy Division, Boy Harsher and Molchat Doma, self-proclaiming his sound as Neueneue Deutsche Welle (new-new German-wave).
mitleerenhänden is an EP about coming to terms with things not going the way you expected them too, about things ending too quickly and about the last hope that remains when all seems lost. The title track is about feeling like no matter what you do it just feels like it is not good enough, which leaves you feeling alone with nothing left to give.
- Edwin Rosen
Mitleerenhänden radiates the romantic energy of dark ‘80s synth pop through a cleaner, dreamier style of production. Though the melodic lines of the vocals and main riff are fairly linear, the atmosphere itself is thick with a breath-taking ambience; it’s the kind of track you can really lose yourself in over and over. It’s an easy trick to whack a bit of reverb onto an instrument/voice to thicken the track out, but to do it in a way that is so discrete yet, so dominant, takes a tremendous amount of skill.
Edwin Rosen’s existing success has suggested he is one to watch, but mitleerenhänden has confirmed it. It’s definitely time to keep a close eye on Rosen, as the momentum felt by his fans following this latest release is promising very exciting things for the future…
