Break the ice - Doctor Lincoln

By Libby Driscoll

Giving us a sneak preview of what’s to come on his upcoming sophomore album Will See You Now, Doctor Lincoln releases the lead single, Break the Ice.

Break the ice - Doctor Lincoln

What greets you straight away is the luscious, floaty feeling of the summer. Channelling ‘90s and ‘00s soft rock, the orchestra of a strummed acoustic guitar backing a modestly distorted lead riff with shakers and solid vocal harmonies instantly places you in a dreamy state of nostalgia. Break the Ice feels like it should be introducing the credits of a noughties teen rom-com (which is meant in the best way possible because, c’mon, who DOESN’T love a teen rom-com from the early 2000s?). Lyrically, Break the Ice explores themes of growth and moving on from failed friendships that were once held dear to Lincoln, and how being ghosted plays into these sorts of situations.

The chorus is impressively catchy, leaving me humming along and listening again possibly more out of desire than that of a journalistic nature. The cherry on top, however, has got to be the saxophone solo. If taking you back to your childhood wasn’t enough, Break the Ice adds a retro ‘80s flair to the music. I must admit, I didn’t see it coming at all but I’m bloomin’ glad it did. Followed by a nicely modulating bridge whilst decorated with synth adlibs and underlying string pads, the track is an absolute treat to nod your head and hum along to.

Releasing Break the Ice as the album’s lead single is a wonderfully strong choice on Doctor Lincoln’s part. It’s brimming with nostalgia, catchiness, strong song writing, and really is just a treat on the ears. Here’s to hoping there’s more where that came from in his album Will See You Now…
